Depending on who you speak to, CPD stands for Continual Professional Development, Continued Professional Development or Continuous Professional Development. Whichever description you prefer it doesn’t matter, you get the gist…..it’s continuing with your learning during your chosen career.
For personal trainers, this may mean attending CPD courses and or workshops. One of our previous blogs look at the benefits of attending CPD courses and, of course, depending on whether you choose an endorsed course, you have the benefit that you earn REPS points so you stay active on the Register of Exercise Professionals. But, let’s look at the impact that attending CPD courses and workshops has on your employment prospects.
In addition to being the course co-ordinator at motive8 CPD, I am also the Personal Training Director at motive8 Group Ltd. In my role I look at quite a lot of CV’s throughout the year. Ask me the question ‘Is it important for personal trainers to attend CPD courses?’ and I will give you a resounding YES!
When I look at any CV not only do I look at what experience the applicant has, but also what courses they have studied and what workshops they have attended.
This tells me a lot about that person:
- How passionate they are about the fitness industry – someone who wants to continue learning shows a huge amount of passion
- How motivated they are not only to develop their own knowledge but also to want to deliver the very best to their clients
- How committed they are to the industry – someone who is willing to give up their spare time and invest some cash into attending a CPD workshop is more likely to be someone who will continue to work for us long term, not someone who will flit from job to job
- They want to continue to grow and become a better personal trainer
As an employer, a personal trainer who shows that they are keen to continue to develop their learning and skills will always get that interview over someone who has shown less commitment to their own CPD.
